Surprise Earth Day Visitor at Sunday school!"

Lily the Cockatoo Says ‘Hi’ at Sunday School

Sunday School had a surprise visitor on April 22: Lily, the Umbrella Cockatoo. Lily is one of our birds that spent a very pampered winter in the rectory with Father Isaias and Christie. Lily had a special reason to be joining our Sunday School kids she represented one of the many species threatened with extinction unless we humans care enough to help them.

On Good Shepherd Sunday, Father talked about how we should all “shepherd” each other with love, kindness, and help. This love must extend to all of creation. As it was also Earth Day, the students learned a bit about parrots, including two species that are getting some emergency help from caring people. They also had an up-close snuggle and pictures with Lily, who loves kids (and lots of attention)!

Parrots live not only in the rapidly disappearing rain- forest, but almost everywhere in the world except the Arctic and Antarctica. Cockatoos hail from Australia and the Philippines. These beautiful and intelligent birds need our protection, as do so many other species.Let’s all be good shepherds of God’s marvelous creation!

The final series, “Woman at the Well,” will have class dates on May 6 and 20. Through this Bible story, children will learn about Jesus’s “living water” and that he offers it to everyone. All people are valuable to God, and Jesus desires that we demonstrate love to everyone. The children can look forward to working with Debbie McG., Father Isaias and Christie Ginson for these lessons.

Thank you to Barbara H. and Jane Ames for teaching the “Wandering in the Wilderness” series! The kids also had fun with Earth Day projects. My boys have lots of seeds growing!

And a big THANK YOU to Barbara Archer for running our Easter Egg Hunt this year. It was another wonderful event for our congregation’s children as well as our visitors!

March 2018

Thank you to everyone that contributed for “Souper” Bowl Sunday! The kids made some great posters this year. St. Margaret’s collected $299 and 92 food items for the St. Ignatius Food Pantry in Hicksville. Thank you to Ken Rice for packing it all in his car to take to the food pantry for us.

Classes continue on March 4 and 11 with Debbie McG.. She has talked to me about changing gears a little bit and doing some teaching about Holy Week. Perfect timing! No matter what she has planned it is sure to be fun for the kids. Please join the class for any dates you can make.

The young people of St. Margaret’s will take an active part in the 10 a.m. service on March 4 as acolytes, intercessors, lectors, and presenters.

If you are interested in the Sunday School Program and would like to receive a letter with more details and our 2018 schedule, please contact me. We can also send our letter to friends, neighbors and family members who may not be already connected to St. Margaret’s.

Looking forward to having everyone in class!

February 2018

This month’s outreach event will be “The Souper Bowl of Caring” on Feb. 4, Super Bowl Sunday. Its mission is to mobilize young people to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities. Parishioners are encouraged to wear their favorite team jerseys, and the children they will also be wearing their jerseys and collecting food items and monetary donations after both services. All proceeds will be given to the St. Ignatius Food Pantry in Hicksville.

Thank you to everyone who joined in our little production of the Epiphany Pageant! Every year it turns out a bit different and takes some creative thinking to make sure the kids can play all the parts that they want to. Of course, we owe a special thank you to Barbara A. - she puts in a lot of work before, during and after the pageant. We couldn’t do it without her – Thank you again, Barbara!

Classes begin again on Feb. 11. Debbie will be teaching Series #4, “Ten Men Healed.” The children will learn about Jesus’s love and being thankful. Class dates for Series #4 are 2/11, 3/4 and 3/11.

Please have the kids come for any dates they can make. Because we review the same story for a few weeks, they can join in at any time. We look forward to seeing everyone in class!

Program Overview: Our Bible Story class will study five different stories over the course of the year. Each story will be explored for several weeks using the Sparkhouse Rotation curriculum.
